4. Upside-Down Glass Bottle Path Edging
Bottles sunk neck-down make a glittering, jewel-like border that turns a plain gravel or mulch path into something with real personality. It’s an edging rather than a walking surface, and it’s one of the most satisfying ways to reuse glass.
What you’ll need:
- Clean glass bottles with labels soaked off
- A trowel and a length of string to mark a straight line
- Rubber mallet
- Sand for backfilling
- Safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves
Dig a trench around 15cm deep along the edge of your path. Push each bottle in neck-first, packing them tightly so they support each other, and tap them down with the mallet until the bases sit level and just proud of the soil. Backfill with sand and firm it in.
Time: two to three hours for a few metres. Difficulty: beginner-friendly.
Sort by colour for a deliberate look — a run of green wine bottles, or clear glass that frosts over in winter and catches low sun. Amber beer bottles give a warmer, honeyed glow. In very cold climates, expect some breakage from frost heave, so keep a few spares aside.
