5. Recycled Plastic Bottle “Brick” Base Path
This one is less about visible charm and more about smart engineering. Plastic bottles packed with sand create a surprisingly firm, free-draining sub-base that stops gravel from disappearing into soft ground.
What you’ll need:
- Large plastic bottles, rinsed and dried
- Dry sand or fine soil for filling
- A funnel, plus scissors or a craft knife
- Sharp sand and 5–8cm of gravel or bark chip for the top layer
- A tamper
Fill each bottle to the brim with dry sand, tamp it down, and screw the cap on tightly. Level your path trench, then lay the bottles on their sides in a tight brick-like pattern, alternating the direction of the necks so they interlock. Compact them, then cover with a layer of sand and finally your chosen surface.
Time: a weekend. Difficulty: moderate — filling bottles takes longer than you’d think.
The most important detail here is sunlight. Plastic bottles become brittle when exposed to UV, so they should always sit under a covering layer rather than acting as the visible surface. Treat them as hidden structure, not decoration, and this path will hold up for years.
