2. Chalkboard Wall Calendar with a Painter’s Tape Grid
There’s something about a chalkboard wall that makes a hallway feel intentional. This version works especially well in mudrooms, entryways, and kitchens where you want the calendar to blend into the wall rather than sit on top of it.
Materials: Chalkboard paint or peel-and-stick chalkboard paper, painter’s tape, a level, chalk or liquid chalk markers, and a soft cloth for erasing.
How to make it: Tape off a rectangle on the wall and paint it according to the manufacturer’s instructions — most chalkboard paint needs two coats and a full curing period, often three days, before you write on it. Once cured, season the surface by rubbing a piece of chalk sideways across the whole board and wiping it off. Then lay out your grid with painter’s tape, pressing the edges down firmly.
Time and difficulty: Twenty minutes of actual work, spread across a few days of drying. No tools beyond tape and a brush.
Customization: Use tape in a metallic or pastel shade for a softer look, or skip the full grid and paint just a monthly header with a blank space below for a free-form family log.
A note on chalk versus markers: Traditional chalk gives you that soft, dusty finish but smudges. Liquid chalk markers look crisp and wipe away with a damp cloth, but they can leave ghosting on some surfaces if left for months. Test in a corner first.
